Festivals in Central America
Central America is a portion of land connecting North American to South America, and is composed of seven nations. The population reaches over forty million people, most of whom are mestizo, with a mixture of Hispanic and indigenous heritages. It is the home of Caribbean water, excellent snorkeling and scuba diving locations. The rain forests are located here, with exotic flora and fauna, well preserved pre-Colombian ruins and towering pyramids.
The population here loves to celebrate, and they do it with gusto. Christmas to New Years is a week long holiday when people throw white confetti at each other in celebration. Many of Central American holidays are based on Latin Catholicism, three of them centering on the Virgin Mary.
The attractions, cultures and tourism all vary wildly from country to country. There are many different festivals throughout Central America, but one of the most vibrant and colorful festivals is Carnival, which is celebrated a week before Lent in Salvador. Another festival, called Semana Santa, means the Holy Week. This ends on Easter Sunday, and is celebrated to the fullest in Guatemala, where colorful sawdust carpets and flowers adorn the processions that take place. Nicaragua hosts the Feats of San Jerinimo, which is celebrated with joy by many. Celebrations can include fairs, parades, songs, and of course partying
